Arranging an assessment

Contact the outpatient line to arrange a chest contouring consultation with the aesthetic surgery service. Ask specifically for an assessment for gynecomastia, and tell the booking team how long the enlargement has been present, whether it is on one side or both, and whether anything about it has changed recently.

What to bring

Bring a complete list of your current medicines, including anything bought without a prescription and any supplements, because a number of commonly used medicines are associated with breast enlargement and the list is part of the assessment rather than a formality. Bring the name of any condition you are treated for, and any imaging or blood tests you have already had. If you have kept a record of your weight over the past year, bring it.

What the consultation involves

A history covering when the enlargement began, how it has changed, what medicines you take and whether you use alcohol or any other substance; an examination of the chest, including the firmness of the tissue beneath the areola and whether the two sides differ; a check for anything that needs investigating in its own right; and a discussion of which operation, if any, fits what was found. You should leave knowing what was found, what it means, and what the options are.

Second opinions

You are entitled to one, and asking for it is not a criticism of anyone. If you have been offered chest surgery elsewhere, a second assessment at a tertiary hospital will either confirm the plan or explain why it would be done differently, and either answer is useful to you.

Interpreting and international patients

Patients travelling from outside Chongqing, and patients who need interpretation, can arrange both through the hospital’s international patient service. Ask when you book so that the appointment is scheduled with enough time for a full discussion rather than a short one.
